Lil Wayne Opens Up About Hurricane Katrina and Family Members He's Lost

Wayne also discussed Lil' WeezyAna Fest.

August 29, 2015, marks the 10-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. While every New Orleans native has their own story of tragedy and triumph, Lil Wayne spoke about where he was at on that day with ESPN’s Michael Smith on his podcast called His &Hers with Jemele Hill.

During the conversation, Wayne felt at the time that Katrina was just another hurricane and everyone would get through it. “Once you see what happened, and how it happened …. You know,” he says. “I’m sorry, but I ain’t never saw Mother Nature do that.”

Wayne and Smith talked about the various levels of loss people from New Orleans went through, whether it was loved ones, prized possessions or their homes. Unfortunately for Wayne, he lost his cousin. He stayed strong throughout his recount of his story, giving a final thought on the situation: “Anything else I lost, it don’t even matter.”

On a lighter note, they also discussed Wayne’s first annual Lil WeezyAna Fest and what we can expect from the show tonight. He revealed the idea behind its creation, stating that he looked to Drake’s OVO Fest for inspiration. But it’s slightly different for Wayne, where some of the proceeds from ticket sales will go to benefit the city through Tha Carter Fund foundation.

Weezy also shared one special guest he’s bringing out: DJ Jubilee. If that’s the level we’re talking about, this show is about to be a hip hop moment you won’t forget. Hear the rest of the interview here, and stream Lil WeezyAna Fest on Tidal tonight.
