It was a day just like any other for 30-year-old Anton Moore until he received a surprising phone call from Hillary Clinton’s team. He was even more surprised when they asked if he would speak at this year’s Democratic National Convention.

The South Philly resident has been an activist for non-violence for quite some time and he even has his own nonprofit called Unity in the Community. This year, Unity will hold its fifth annual peace week, which will include a peace rally, a jobs clinic, a charity baseball game and a town hall meeting.

“We talk about police violence a lot. I know it’s a major topic, but we have to talk about young kids who are being wiped out of society,” Moore said. “To me, this is a major issue. It doesn’t just affect one person’s family. The trauma extends to the entire neighborhood and they all become comfortable with the idea of people dying from gun violence.”

Moore will be speaking tonight at the Wells Fargo Center for the DNC. He hopes to speak about community engagement and being able to vocalize the pain that he sees in Philly and other cities. With much of the violence that has been recently occurring in this country, his speech could not come at a better time.
