As Americans taking place in one of the most vicious elections this nation has seen, we’ve been forced to watch both candidates take low blows to eviscerate each other. So when they take a night off to share a few welcomed laughs, we can all take pleasure in it.

On Thursday evening, both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump took the stage at the 71st Annual Al Smith Charity Dinner. Both candidates used the opportunity to not only cheekily make fun of themselves but also roast each other.

It’s no surprise Donald Trump was at times met with several boos from New York’s elite, but he did have a few shocking moments of hilarity.

When Trump insulted the “biased media,” he jokingly pointed out an example of how they are tougher on him than others.

“You want the proof? Michelle Obama gives a speech, and everyone loves it,” Mr. Trump said. “My wife, Melania, gives the exact same speech and people get on her case.”

And of course he can’t go a night without bringing up Hillary’s emails, but at least he — or his writers — came up with a tongue-in-cheek way to do so.

“Just before taking the dais, Hillary accidentally bumped into me. And she very civilly said, ‘Pardon me,’” Mr. Trump said, as Hillary laughed. “I very politely replied, ‘Let me talk to you about that after I get into office.’”

Although he did get some laughs — and even more boos later in his act — the star of the show was Hillary Clinton. 

When talking about the Statue of Liberty, Hillary boasted that most Americans see the iconic figure as a symbol of hope and a warm welcome for immigrants arriving on the nation’s shores. But Mr. Trump, she said, “looks at the Statue of Liberty and sees a 4” — a jab at his comments rating the physical appearance of women.

“Maybe a 5 if she loses the torch and tablet and changes her hair,” she added just before bringing her point home.

“You know, come to think, know what would be a good number for a woman? 45,” she said referring to her becoming the country’s first female president.

Surely there was some truth in the jokes both candidates made at each other’s expense, after all they were nothing more than lighthearted versions of their debate material. But it was nice to see both candidates take a night to relax and share a laugh, which is something we haven’t seen in a while.
