Officers Responding to Burglary Call Shoot Man and Dog at Wrong Home
Police officers responding to a burglary call showed up to the wrong house and shot a man and a dog in DeKalb, Ga., Monday evening. Additionally, the officer firing the weapon shot a fellow cop at the scene, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Chris McKinley, a resident, and his wife and 1-year-old daughter were watching a movie when he heard his dogs barking. He walked into another room with one of his dogs and found that three officers responding to a burglary had entered the back way of the home through an unlocked door, according to the George Bureau of Investigation (GBI). That's when two officers opened fire striking the man, dog and the third officer.
Officers Quhanna Lloyd and Timothy Harden were placed on administrative leave. Officer Travis Jones was shot in the hip and was being treated at Grady Memorial Hospital, where he was in "serious but stable" condition.
The officers were told that the burglary was taking place at the "farthest house at the end of the street." McKinley's home was reportedly located at the second house on the street. Interim DeKalb police Chief James Conroy offered an explanation for the mix-up, according to the AJC.
“Without getting into the specifics of this case, that’s one of the challenges when people call 911, we often don’t know where they are,” Conroy said. “We want officers to go out and investigate crimes like this rather than react. We want to go out and actually apprehend criminals and help people.”
The GBI continues to investigate the incident.
