More Than a Super Bowl Commercial Teaser: Missy Elliot Comes Through With 'Pep Rally'
This time last year, the Super Bowl had us cheering for Missy Elliott big time, as Katy Perry invited her and Lenny Kravitz to join her on stage during an eclectic half-time performance. This year, we got lucky again, but this time in the form of new music and a sorta-funny commercial alongside Alec Baldwin.
Starring as herself in a commercial for Amazon Echo, Missy debuted her new song, weaving it into a skit alongside Baldwin, Jason Schwartzman and former Miami Dolphins QB Dan Marino.
In the spirit of the big game, Elliot’s new song “Pep Rally” is a football-inspired anthem that is helping fuel her comeback, which initially was sparked by "WTF (Where They From)," her collaboration with Pharrell.
The track features marching-band-style horns and drums, sprinkled with festive, sporty lyrics such as, “Bouncing and bouncing, now stop, drop, rock and roll / And yeah, we get cracking like we up at the Super Bowl.”
Elliott released the track in full hours before the commercial aired during the Super Bowl, tweeting, “#SuperBowl this my new Bounce ‘PepRally’ get u right 4the game where my Clappers.”
It is still unclear if “Pep Rally” will make the cut on Elliott’s forthcoming seventh studio album, but if her Super Bowl cameo is any indication, the rapper is having a lot of fun returning to the spotlight.
