U.S. Naval Academy Launches Investigation Of Noose Found On School Grounds
In a statement released on Friday, Naval Academy Superintendent Vice Admiral Sean Buck revealed the noose was discovered at Rickover Hall, the school’s engineering building. The noose was found in a construction site off limits to staff where hoists are being used to install new piping.
Carl Snowden, civil rights chairman at the Caucus of African-American Leaders, was anonymously alerted of the noose’s hanging on August 28, the 56th anniversary of the March on Washington led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. where he gave his iconic "I Have a Dream" speech. The group contacted the academy following the email alert.
Buck stated that although the tied rope could be apart of a hoisting system to complete ductwork, the academy will continue to investigate the incident because it "takes all allegations of race hate very seriously and is working quickly and diligently to determine the facts surrounding the reported incident, specifically why the reported incident was not brought to light sooner."
CNN reports Snowden believes the alleged noose was racially motivated, but will hold any “conclusions until the facts come out."
