Former Miss Kentucky Who Smuggled Drugs To Imprisoned Boyfriend Gets Probation
The former Miss Kentucky who was arrested for smuggling marijuana into a correctional facility avoided jail time as she was sentenced with probation on Wednesday.
In court, 28-year-old Kia Hampton, of Louisville, convinced Allen County Common Pleas Court Judge David Cheney she was remorseful for her conduct and learned her lesson, reported Your News Now.
Although Hampton faced a maximum of three years in prison and a $10,000 fine, she was only sentenced a three-year probation term. She was also ordered to pay a fine of $2,500, serve 80 hours of community service and submit to random drug testing while on probation.
Hampton was charged with a third-degree felony of the illegal conveyance of drugs onto the grounds of a specified governmental facility.
Hampton’s drug smuggling occurred when she was dating Jeremy Kelly, an inmate at the Allen Oakwood Correctional Institute in Lima. She was ordered to have no contact with her “ex-boyfriend,” during her probation.
According to prosecutors, Kelly directed Hampton to bring drugs into the prison last year. Hampton was successful on three occasions until she was caught in May 2017.
Hampton was indicted by a grand jury in July after attempting to smuggle drugs to Kelly, who is serving a four-year prison term on two drug trafficking charges out of Wood County. In February, she withdrew her earlier plea of guilty and pleaded no contest to the felony charge.
Hampton was crowned Miss Kentucky USA in November of 2010 when she was 21 years old. She was the first African-American chosen to represent Kentucky in the Miss USA pageant.
