Houston Radio Station Switches to All-Beyoncé

News92 FM fires staff, turns to Queen Bey for help in rebranding efforts.

It’s all Beyoncé, all the time at Houston’s first FM news radio station.

As of Tuesday (Oct. 7) New92 FM “aired it’s last broadcast” according to the station's website. “This difficult decision is a result of sustained poor ratings performance and significant financial losses over the past three years despite the substantial financial and human resources we invested," reads a statement. "Unfortunately, the market hasn’t shown a sustainable appetite for news radio, but each of you motivated us daily to produce a high-quality news program. Together, we made history."

Now owned by Radio One, News92 has been renamed “B92-FM.” Although the decision to change everything to Bey didn’t come lightly, it was a no-brainer according to Radio One’s Yashima Azilove. "She's Queen Bey. In looking to make a transition, we go back to what we know," Azilove said. "We know urban radio. We're in Houston, the combination seemed like a winning one."

The radio station’s staff of 47 people were sent packing with severance packages, the same day that the new format was announced.

One of the employees impacted by the mass firing wasn't too surprised. "They gave it their best shot," Dennis Spellman said of the fledgling station. "I can't think of any other company that would have given us that amount of time."

Beyoncé is all over Houston, even when she’s not physically there. Last month her father and former manager, Mathew Knowles, held a day-long community college course on Queen Bey.
