A 31-year-old partially-blind man whom police suspected of killing his 5-month-old son turned himself in on Tuesday morning, Baltimore police said.

Perry Nelson-Johnson, of Baltimore, faces several charges including, first- and second-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault, first-degree child abuse resulting in death, first-degree child abuse, causing severe physical injury, second-degree child abuse, reckless endangerment, and dangerous weapon with intent to injure, reported WBAL.

On Friday morning, police and medics were concerned when the baby, identified as Emmanuel Johnson, displayed markings inconsistent with the story Nelson-Johnson gave.

The baby’s father told police Emmanuel rolled off the bed and hit his head; however, investigators noticed old and new injuries all over the child’s body. The baby was sent to shock trauma, where he was pronounced dead. The autopsy revealed Emmanuel suffered from severe head trauma, police said.  

"[The child] was observed to have old and new injuries. It's a sad shame that I have to speak to you about old injuries on a 5-month-old, but old injuries on a 5-month-old basically tell you how long this child had been abused. An autopsy was completed and revealed severe head trauma on the child," Baltimore police media relations Chief T.J. Smith said.

The case was ruled a homicide by multiple blunt force trauma to the head, police said.

According to police, Nelson-Johnson has a guide stick to navigate, and investigators believe he used it as a weapon on the baby.

"The injuries weren't consistent with a fall out of the bed and the evidence with the scene didn't corroborate that," Smith said. "There isn't enough excuses in a world you can give someone for inflicting this type of harm against a 5-month-old child. The mother has not been charged with a crime at this point in time, but our investigation is ongoing."

Police said no other children were at the house when the incident occurred, but the parents do have other children.
