Big Daddy Kane Co-Signs Macklemore's New Single 'Downtown'

The Brooklyn legend speaks.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’s “Downtown” is a catchy tune, but at the same time it’s been receiving some criticism for the song’s gimmicky content about purchasing mopeds. Minus the funky horns, many critics have also said the appeal is similar to Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’s Billboard charting single “Uptown Funk.” Whatever you love it or hate it, the song has already made its mark in pop culture.

Despite all the chatter, Big Daddy Kane wanted to set the record straight and endorse the song. Just a day after the VMAs aired on MTV, the veteran MC shouted out Mack for his efforts in educating the youth on legends like Melle Mel, Kool Moe Dee and Grandmaster Caz. Compared to other artists in his position, B.D.K. thinks Macklemore is doing a good thing by instilling some hip hop history in his music.

REAL TALK!!! I don't see one artist in the game that put Melle Mel, Kool Moe Dee or Grandmaster Caz on their new song or let them perform on the VMA's (Including Me) but people wanna have a problem with @macklemore for paying homage to them? We don't acknowledge our own & get mad when another color does. Now if one of them passes, then we wanna post s**t about them, say RIP & get t-shirts with their picture. FOH!!!!!!! Learn about your history & preserve it now. If not, SHUT THE F**K UP!!! To me this is about real pioneers getting recognition in today's society.
