Incredible Viral 'Humans Of NY' Story Subject 'Tanqueray' Is Now Taking Photos With Fans And Spilling More Tea

Aunty is basically the most interesting woman on the Internet right now!

UPDATE:

We got another update on everyone’s auntie-in-their-head Tanqueray, but this one didn’t come by way of @HumansOfNewYork. A fan recognized the viral sensation on the streets of NYC and made sure to get more tea for the rest of us who weren’t so fortunate. First thing’s first, we can stop calling Tanqueray by her stripper name from back in the day and address her as Ms. Stephanie.

Publicist JDot. of The JDot. Agency shared this post on Instagram after his encounter with Ms. Stephanie that turned into an hour-long chat, alerting us all that “she’s being approached by every industry exec under the sun” to tell her story. We’re not sure if that means a book or a movie, or possibly both are on the way, but we’ll stay tuned like he instructed.

JDot. spoke with BET exclusively about the run-in with the Internet legend. “Meeting her in person was surreal. She was just as colorful as you’ve read on the Humans of NY Instagram page. Profanity, engaging conversation and all. Super sweet and definitely gave all the Auntie vibes.”

He continued saying, “On her new-found celebrity status, she said it took some time getting used to in the beginning, but she’s fine with it now. Various pedestrians in the street recognized her instantly and came over for photos and praise. Most calling her a ‘legend’, an ‘icon’ and thanking her for telling her truth and for being so inspirational.”

So what stories did Ms. Stephanie share this time? She gave a vivid history lesson in racism during her youth when she’d go out to parties where they had brown paper bags on the door step, and if you were Black and didn’t match that color or were lighter, you wouldn’t be let in. In her usual tell-like-it-is spirit, she told JDot. and his friend Fedler Ais, “You guys wouldn’t have stood a chance!”

“My stripper name was Tanqueray. Back in the seventies I was the only black girl making white girl money..."

That is just one juicy soundbite from the latest “Humans of New York” post from this fabulous woman who has since gone viral. This woman’s story is so scandalous—filled with strippers, mobsters and an affair with the president—that social media is petitioning for a book or documentary on her life. Well, while we don’t know the status on that yet, HONY creator Brandon Stanton did hear the Internet’s pleas and followed up the initial post featuring “Tanqueray” with two more!
