Kendrick Lamar Talks Almost Naming His Album Tu P.a.C

K Dot reveals how his album became about a butterfly.

The last words that Kendrick Lamar echoes on his critically acclaimed sophomore LP ("Pac! Pac!") have more resonance now.

Lamar is making his media rounds post-To Pimp a Butterfly's crazy release, giving the rundown on the album's tlte and concept.

"It's so much of a spiritual process in making the album," he told MTV, during a chat about some his favorite tracks. "I gotta really feel connected to the music, feel connected to what I'm talking about. And that can drain you. 'Cause you pulling all these different emotions out, you grabbing all these different experiences around the world and all these conversation pieces, and you almost have to reenact that."

For Lamar, his pivotal point in making this album is his celebrity, and that's mostly what TPAB is all about (that, and letting the homies who can't leave the block see the world). The original name, he said, was Tu Pimp a Catepillar. Well, technically, "I knew that that was going to be the concept, I didn't know if that was going to be the title."

But he's already out of his cocoon, and the word "butterfly," he noted, is more reflective of the "brightness of life." It's also a more stark contrast to "pimp," which "has so much aggression in it."

To Pimp a Butterfly debuted at No. 1 in three countries its [surprise] first week. He's prepping his "King Kunta" video next.
