Jay Z Wins Fight Over His Masters

Hov granted ownership of The Dynasty and The Life and Times of S. Carter albums, beats former Roc-A-Fella sound engineer in court case.

Jay Z came out on top in the legal case over his own music. Chauncey Mahan, a former sound engineer for Roc-A-Fella Records, was accused of a $100,000 extortion plot after he attempted to sell back the master recordings of Hov’s albums, The Dynasty, and The Life and Times of S. Carter

Mahan claimed ownership of the music that Jay reportedly believed had been lost. Authorities intervened, setting up a sting operation, and seizing the music from Mahan.

Although he denied the extortion claim, which was later dropped, Mahan sued Jay Z and Roc Nation last year. He argued that he was an important part of creating the music, and therefore a rightful owner. The judge threw the suit out, ruling that Mahan took too long to file and granting Hov full ownership of the masters.
